Anaesthesia for caesarean section in a patient with Parkinson ’s disease

Parkinson ’s disease [PD] affects 3% of the population over the age of 65-years, with a slight male predominance; however up to 10% of patients develop symptoms before the age of 40 years.1 Estimates of prevalence rates of PD in European countries range from 65.6 to 12 500 per 100 000 and annual incidence e stimates range from 5 to 346 per 100 000.2 The prevalence of PD among women of child-bearing age is unknown, and pregnancy in women with PD is very uncommon. According to the available estimates, about 5% of PD patients fall within the childbearing age group.
