Protecting my patients ’ story: Beneficent or paternalistic?

I was about to sit down to lunch after seeing a full morning of psychotherapy patients, when my office manager stepped in to my office. With a fretful look on her face she said, “This was just delivered for you,” as she handed me a very official looking letter. I could tell right away that it was a subpoena, as I have received many of these in my thirty years of practice. Typically, these subpoenas are either requests for patients’ records, or a notice that I will be expected to testify in court or other legal proceeding.
