Previous Mental Disorders and Subsequent Onset of Chronic Back or Neck Pain: Findings From 19 Countries

Back and neck pain are among the most common pain conditions in the general population,24,25,55 being, respectively, the leading and the fourth cause of years lost due to disability worldwide.55 Twelve-month prevalence estimates of back pain range between 12 and 56%,11,12,35,37,41,53 and of neck pain, from 12 to 34%3,12,30; co-occurrence is frequent.9 Furthermore, back/neck pain is often associated with other pain conditions, physical diseases, and mental disorders.2,5,8,10,22,23,45,53
