The standard variable tariff has had its day

Commenting on the announcement today (Monday) that energy company Centrica/British Gas is to phase out standard variable tariffs (SVT) for its customers, UNISON national energy officer Matt Lay said: “This should be welcome news for both British Gas customers and its employees. It should lead to cheaper bills for households and much more certainty for its workforce, at a time of much upheaval in the energy market. “It looks like the SVT has very definitely had its day with the largest energy supplier in the UK putting it on notice. British Gas now needs to introduce new competitive products to make its customer base more stable and give greater certainty to employees.” Notes to editors: – UNISON is the largest staff union in Centrica/British Gas and the energy sector. – At the moment when Centrica/British Gas customers come to the end of their energy deals, they’re automatically rolled onto an SVT. From now on new customers will no longer be put on an SVT, but on new default fixed term contracts instead.
