Endoscopic Treatment of Boerhaave Syndrome Using Polyglycolic Acid Sheets and Fibrin Glue: A Report of Two Cases.

We report the cases of two patients with Boerhaave syndrome who were successfully treated using PGA sheets. The present clinical outcomes suggest that the use of PGA sheets is feasible and safe for treating patients with Boerhaave syndrome, and that they may be another treatment option. Authors: He H, Li PC, Jia W, Hu B, Ji CS Abstract BACKGROUND Recently, targeted therapy for malignant tumors has developed rapidly, but there is still no effective targeted therapy for advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Methylenetetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase 2 (MTHFD2) is a key enzyme involved in folate metabolism and is closely related to the proliferation in many cancers. However, few studies have explored the expression of MTHFD2 in ESCC and its prognostic significance. MATERIAL AND METHODS The expressions of MTHFD2, ki67, and p53 in ESCC tissues were detected by immunohistochemistry. Further, ...

TaylorAbstractBackgroundAlthough a number of previous studies have noted the association between body mass index (BMI) and upper gastrointestinal (UGI) cancer risk, little evidence exists in the Chinese esophageal squamous dysplasia population. This prospective study investigated the association between BMI and UGI cancer risk in the Linxian Dysplasia Nutrition Intervention Trial (NIT) cohort.MethodsA total of 3298 participants were included in the final analysis. In our institute, a “flexible” gastric tube designed to supply a sufficient amount of blood to the tip of the gastric tube (the same as a subtotal gastric tube) and simultaneously provide sufficient length for tension-free anastomosis in the cervical surgical field (the same as a narr...

AbstractBackgroundThere has been no definitive evidence of chemoradiotherapy being superior to radiotherapy alone in patients aged 80  years or older. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the results of radiotherapy and chemoradiotherapy in patients aged 80 years or older with esophageal cancer in the Japanese Nationwide Cancer Database.MethodsA total of 358 patients aged 80  years or older who were treated with radiotherapy alone or with chemoradiotherapy for esophageal cancer between 2009 and 2011 were enrolled.ResultsThe 5-year overall survival (OS) rates in patients with cStages 0 –I, I...

ConclusionsCirrhotic patients have higher odds of developing pulmonary complications, ascites, and anastomotic leak during the first postoperative month. Although, 30-day mortality was higher among cirrhotic patients after esophagectomy, liver disease does not seem to influence long-term prognosis.

Abstract Elderly patients with esophageal carcinoma may benefit from concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). However, the optimal concurrent chemotherapy regimen has not been determined. The aim of our study was to assess the efficiency and tolerance of treatment with a concurrent 5-fluorouracil (5-Fu)-based regimen and a taxane-based regimen combined with radiotherapy in elderly patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). A total of 46 patients with ESCC aged older than 65 years were included in this study. The patient population was divided into two treatment groups: 24 patients who received CCRT with ...
