In this study, we conducted a cross-sectional survey among 419 acupuncturists nation-wide to investigate the top 10 and top 99 acupuncture indications in private clinics in the United States. We found the top 10 indications to be: lower back pain, depression, anxiety, headache, arthritis, allergies, general pain, female infertility, insomnia, neck pain and frozen shoulder. Among the top 99 indications, pain represents the largest category; and mental health management, especially for mood disorders, is in greatest demand. The following popular groups are: immune system dysfunctions, gastrointestinal diseases, gynecology an...

Abstract Bee venom acupuncture is a form of acupuncture in which bee venom is applied to the tips of acupuncture needles, stingers are extracted from bees, or bees are held with an instrument exposing the stinger, and applied to acupoints on the skin. Bee venom is a complex substance consisting of multiple anti-inflammatory compounds such as melittin, adolapin, apamin. Other substances such as phospholipase A2 can be anti-inflammatory in low concentrations and pro-inflammatory in others. However, bee venom also contains proinflammatory substances, melittin, mast cell degranulation peptide 401, and histamine. Never...

(Natural News) Acupuncture has been proven by numerous studies to be an effective treatment against various types of pain. Sinew acupuncture, a new modality of this ancient practice, was observed to provide almost immediate benefits for specific types of injuries. A team of scientists is seeking to understand the mechanisms of sinew acupuncture and determine...

Abstract Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic autoimmune inflammatory and debilitating disease that involves the systemic imbalance of the immune network. Previous studies have shown that acupuncture can help treat RA. However, its specific mechanisms are not fully understood. Thus, the present study was designed to clarify the mechanisms of acupuncture acted on RA via immune network modulation using complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)-induced arthritic rats. Results revealed that manual acupuncture (MA) could alleviate the inflammation and pain of infected joints. Moreover, MA could effectively stimulate...

ConclusionsThe combination of acupotomy loosing can improve the maximum angle of active extension position, maximum angle of active flexion position and range of motion in affected elbow joint for RA patients with elbow joint stiffness, whose efficacy was superior to single basic treatment and electroacupuncture combined with basic treatment. Meanwhile, the levels of proinflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α and IL-6 can be decreased, and the level of anti-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-10 can be increased, playing a role in regulating the imbalance between proinflammatory cytokines and anti-inflammatory cytokines...

AbstractObjectiveTo investigate the analgesic time-effect characteristics and changes in concentrations of rabbit ’s hypothalamic 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and noradrenaline (NE) caused by buccal acupuncture in the rheumatoid arthritis (RA) rabbits, and to reveal the analgesic central mechanism of buccal acupuncture, thereby providing a theoretical basis for the treatment of pain by buccal acupuncture.MethodsForty rabbits were randomly divided into a normal group, a model group, a body acupuncture group, and a buccal acupuncture group, with 10 rabbits in each group. No model was established in the normal group, whil...

Conclusions: In our review, we concluded that acupuncture alone or combined with other treatment modalities is beneficial to the clinical conditions of RA without adverse effects reported and can improve function and quality of life and is worth trying. Several important possible mechanisms were summarized including anti-inflammatory effect, antioxidative effect, and regulation of immune system function. However, there is still inconsistency regarding the clinical efficacy and lack of well-designed human/animal double-blinded RCTs. Future discussion for further agreement on taking traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory ...
