An Update on IRB Reorganization: A Panel Discussion

Discussion ” . For more than a year, the NIH Intramural Research Program (IRP) has been undergoing significant changes within its clinical research program. Among the more challenging of the changes are the NIH Institutional Review Board (IRB) reorganization and consolidation, and the need to create a single IT system for managing clinical research protocols. This seminar will include presentations from three speakers followed by a panel discussion and questions from the audience.• Dr. Virginia (Gini) Guptill, Acting Director of the Office of Research Support and Compliance (ORSC), will provide background on the factors that led to the decision to reorganize and consolidate the IRBs within the NIH IRP;• Chandan Sastry, Information Technology Specialist with OIR, will demonstrate the new NIH instance of iRIS (Integrated Research Information System), the IRB management and tracking system that has been customized to serve the IT and administrative needs of the consolidated IRBs; and• Dr. Sara Chandros Hull, Director of the NHGRI Bioethics Core, will introduce the Pilot IRB (General Medicine Panel 1), the first IRB panel to be formed under the new organization. The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion with the three speakers and other members of the IRP leadership, who will answer questions from the audience.
