Decreased pain tolerance before surgery and increased postoperative narcotic requirements in abstinent tobacco smokers.

CONCLUSIONS: In this study, smokers deprived of cigarettes exhibited decreased pain tolerance before surgery and required a larger quantity of postoperative extra morphine equivalent than non-smokers.
