Surveillance for Lyme Disease - United States, 2008-2015.

This report highlights the continuing public health challenge of Lyme disease in states with high incidence and demonstrates its emergence in neighboring states that previously experienced few cases. Educational efforts should be directed accordingly to facilitate prevention, early diagnosis, and appropriate treatment. As Lyme disease emerges in neighboring states, clinical suspicion of Lyme disease in a patient should be based on local experience rather than incidence cutoffs used for surveillance purposes. A diagnosis of Lyme disease should be considered in patients with compatible clinical signs and a history of potential exposure to infected ticks, not only in states with high incidence but also in areas where Lyme disease is known to be emerging. These findings underscore the ongoing need to implement personal prevention practices routinely (e.g., application of insect repellent and inspection for and removal of ticks) and to develop other effective interventions. Authors: Kolarz B, Podgorska D, Podgorski R Abstract Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, autoimmune connective tissue disease. In addition to joint involvement, extra-articular changes and organ complications also occur in the course of the disease. Untreated disease leads to disability and premature death. Therefore, it is very important to recognise and begin treatment early. Based on the presence of rheumatoid factor and antibodies against citrullinated peptides, we can distinguish two forms of the disease: seropositive and seronegative. Research continues to elucidate the mechanisms of the onset of the disease, ...

Conclusions Most SCA children have an ischaemic ECG with elevated serum cTnT, especially during VOC, which suggests ischaemic-induced cardiac injury. However, elevated serum cTnT can occur without an ischaemic ECG and vice versa. Performing only electrocardiography or cTnT to detect ischaemia-induced cardiac injury may be misleading. Therefore, when there is a high index of suspicion, both tests should be undertaken, especially during VOC, to ensure prompt, effective treatment. Abbreviations AHC, apparently healthy children; AUC, area under the ROC curve; BMI, body mass index; cTnT, cardiac troponin T; ECG, electrocardiogr...

Abstract Sense of belonging and involvement has shown to be positively associated with academic achievement and retention. We argue that a focus on sense of belonging and involvement specifically at the departmental level is valuable, yet rarely discussed in the literature. In this article, we describe the development and evaluation of a questionnaire measuring university students' sense of belonging to and involvement in their "home" department (biology). The questionnaire was named the DeSBI questionnaire (Departmental Sense of Belonging and Involvement) and was administered to students attending an R1...
