Why don't more people work before medical school?

I'll be working in industry as a Chemical Engineer (hopefully pharmaceuticals), before applying to medical school. My plan is to work for a few years to save up money for medical school, so this way I'm not drowning in debt. I realize that the quicker way to medical school is to apply fresh out of undergrad, and pay off your loans as a resident or, more commonly, when you are an attending physician. This is definitely a viable plan, no doubt. I just don't see why more people don't save up... Why don't more people work before medical school?
