Balloon Pulmonary Angioplasty for Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension: Results of a Multicenter Registry Original Articles

Conclusions— This multicenter registry suggested improved hemodynamic results after BPA. Complication rates were high, but overall survival was comparable with pulmonary endarterectomy. BPA may be an important therapeutic option in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.

We describe the impact of this ten-year Network on cardiac complications in patients with thalassemia major (TM).Methods. Among the 2497 emoglobinopathies patients consecutively enrolled in the MIOT Network we considered the 1401 TM patients who performed an end-of-study MRI. Per protocol the MRI follow up was scheduled every 18±3 months. Myocardial iron overload (MIO) was quantified by the multislice multiecho T2* technique. Biventricular function was quantified by cine images.Results. At the last MRI significantly higher global heart T2* values (35.5±10.7 ms vs 29.2±12.0 ms; P

Authors: Manolis AA, Manolis TA, Mikhailidis DP, Manolis AS Abstract INTRODUCTION: Cancer patients are subject to cardiotoxic effects of cancer therapy and as more patients survive cancer due to improved treatment they are exposed to various forms of cardiovascular (CV) disease (CVD) as they age, and vice-versa. Such an interplay of age with both malignancy and CVD may contribute to increased morbidity and mortality. Areas covered: This review considers the effects of cancer drug treatment on the CV system. In Part I of this review, the various types of CV and cardiometabolic toxicity of anti-cancer drugs and the p...

ré F Abstract The exercise test is performed routinely in cardiology; its main indication is the diagnosis of myocardial ischemia, evaluated along with the subject's pretest probability and cardiovascular risk level. Other criteria, such as analysis of repolarization, must be taken into consideration during the interpretation of an exercise test, to improve its predictive value. An exercise test is also indicated for many other cardiac diseases (e.g. rhythm and conduction disorders, severe asymptomatic aortic stenosis, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, peripheral artery disease, hypertension). Moreover, an exerc...

AbstractThe purpose of our analysis was to assess the effects of pulmonary hypertension (PH) on clinical outcomes of patients undergoing laparoscopic procedures. Pulmonary hypertension alters physiologic patterns that has the potential to complicate laparoscopic procedures, however, an in-depth analysis evaluating survival outcomes, complications, and associated comorbidities has not been done before. Data from the National Inpatient Survey were used to identify 179,663 patients without PH and 1453 patients with PH undergoing laparoscopic procedures from the years 2003 –2013. In patients with pulmonary hypertension, ...

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is an entity with high morbidity and mortality worldwide. COPD mortality for 2020 is predicted at third place, second only to ischemic heart disease and cerebrovascular disease (CVD). COPD patients have a higher risk of morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular causes, such as ischemic heart disease, heart failure, peripheral artery disease, diabetes mellitus, depression, thromboembolism, pulmonary hypertension, renal failure, cardiac arrhythmias and obesity.

Background: Patients (pts) with severe aortic regurgitation (AI) often present with symptoms of shortness of breath (SOB) or heart failure (HF); however, the effect of these symptoms and severity of aortic regurgitation on patient-perceived health status is unknown. Methods: Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ) data were collected using tablet computers from pts presenting for routine outpatient cardiovascular assessment between 6/1/2011 and 8/31/2012 who also underwent echocardiography within 90 days. Pts with other valvular lesions (including aortic stenosis) moderate or greater in severity, congenital heart di...
