More than 80% of VA Medical Facilities Offer Integrative Medicine for Pain Management

A new study from the RAND Corporation shows that nearly 80% of military medical facilities are offering integrative medicine for pain management and psychological treatment instead of opioids when possible. RAND conducted an environmental scan of military treatment facilities (MTFs) to understand the availability of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), the conditions for which CAM is being used, and the types and process of credentialing and privileging of CAM providers. They found that most MTFs (83%) offer CAM services, usually up to eight different types, with relaxation therapy, acupuncture, progressive muscle relaxation, guided imagery, and chiropractic being the most common.
