Commentary on “Determinants of Acute Kidney Injury and Renal Function Decline after Endovascular Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair”

In this issue Dr van Eps and colleagues report on prognostic factors of acute kidney injury (AKI) and renal function decline leading to chronic kidney disease (CKD) following elective endovascular repair (EVAR) in a cohort of 212 consecutive patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).1 Administration of an iodinated contrast agent to perform angiography during EVAR and computed tomographic angiography during follow-up to supervise the procedure and detect complications of EVAR are considered to be the main culprits in the development of AKI and subsequently CKD, observed in 15% and 23.5% of patients, respectively, in the authors' study.
