Is laser acupuncture an effective complementary therapy for obesity management? A systematic review of clinical trials.

CONCLUSION: Although some studies have indicated beneficial effects for LA on obesity, the lack of evidence with high methodological quality made it impossible to reach a definitive conclusion about the efficacy of LA for obesity management. Further high-quality, randomised, sham-controlled clinical trials with a larger sample size are needed to shed light on the efficacy of LA for obesity management and weight maintenance. Authors: Zhang Y, Li J, Mo G, Liu J, Yang H, Chen X, Liu H, Cai T, Zhang X, Tian X, Zhou Z, Huang W Abstract Obesity is a worldwide public health problem. Currently, increasing evidence suggests acupuncture and related therapies are effective for obesity. This network meta-analysis (NMA) was performed to compare the effectiveness of different acupuncture and related therapies. We searched potential randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in three international databases. Thirty-four trials involving 2283 participants were included. Pairwise meta-analysis showed that acupuncture and related therapies were superior to li...

Authors: Kim JS, Kim KH, Kim WW Abstract OBJECTIVES: Acupuncture is increasing in popularity as a complementary and alternative medicine. Pneumothorax is the most common and potentially serious adverse effect after acupuncture. This complication can cause fatality in the absence of rapid treatment. Here, we analyze the clinical presentation and discuss prevention of post-acupuncture pneumothorax and an approach to reducing this complication. METHODS: Patients presenting with post-acupuncture pneumothorax in our hospital center during 2011-2015 were retrospectively analyzed. Body mass index (BMI), patient's pre-...

Conclusions Our review suggests that acupuncture for obesity has beneficial effect on serum leptin levels compared to no treatment or oral anorexiant. Additional acupuncture treatment on diet therapy or exercise demonstrated greater reduction in serum leptin levels, whereas no significant difference was shown between the acupuncture and sham acupuncture groups. Although the results are of limited value due to the moderate quality and clinical heterogeneity, acupuncture can be used as an effective and safe treatment in obese patients.

Authors: Deng YZ, Li LB, Xu LG, Zhou D, Wei LJ, Liu Y Abstract Acupuncture is an integral part of ancient Chinese medical practice. The technique has been used extensively in pain relief and is being tried for many other chronic conditions. Industrial development and affluence lead to the increase in the prevalence of many endocrine disorders such as diabetes, obesity, and polycystic ovarian disease. The rising prevalence of the endocrine morbidity is observed in both the developing and developed nations. The management of these disorders involves major lifestyle modification coupled with a long-term drug intake. I...

Authors: Tseng CC, Tseng A, Tseng J, Chang CH Abstract Purpose. A patient-assessor-blinded, randomized, sham-controlled crossover trial was performed to investigate the effectiveness of laser acupuncture on anthropometric measurements and appetite sensation in obese subjects. Methods. Fifty-two obese subjects were randomly assigned to either the laser acupuncture group or the sham laser acupuncture group. Subjects within each group received the relevant treatment three times a week for 8 weeks. After a two-week washout period, the subjects then received the treatment of the opposite group for another 8 weeks. BMI, ...

Conclusions. This systematic review suggests the potential of pharmacopuncture for obesity and musculoskeletal diseases. However, it is difficult to recommend pharmacopuncture as an evidence-based treatment because of methodological flaws and small sample sizes of the included studies. Further well-designed trials are needed to draw a definitive conclusion. PMID: 26881003 [PubMed]
