Influenza and risk of later celiac disease: a cohort study of 2.6 million people.

CONCLUSION: A positive association with influenza diagnosis is consistent with the hypothesis that infections may play a role in CD development. We could neither confirm a causal association with pandemic vaccination, nor refute entirely a small excess risk. PMID: 29076383 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Kumar SSS, Palaniandavan S, Bhargavi MV, Gambeer AS, Nithyalakshmi G Abstract Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a common form of chronic autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) and it often coexists with other autoimmune diseases, but Hashimoto's thyroiditis associated with an autosomal dominant neurofibromatosis type 1 is exceedingly rare. A 30-year-old woman presented with complaints of headache for 1 year on and off. Physical examination revealed nodular swelling in the neck, cafe-au-lait spots, and neurofibromas covering the entire surface of her body. Her thyroid hormones were within normal limits. Thyroid ultraso...

In this study, morphological features, dielectric properties, and microwave absorbing performances of thermoplastic polyurethane composite sheets prepared with solution mixing method by using different amounts and types of carbon fillers, carbon black (CB), graphite (G), carbon nanofiber (CNF), and multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) were investigated, in detail. Microstructural properties and microwave absorbing characteristics of composites were analyzed with scanning electron microscope and vector network analyzer by transmission line method, respectively. Reflection loss (RL) analyses of composites showed that CNF and ...

AbstractAs the worldwide population ages, the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) increases. However, the results of promising medications have been unsatisfactory. Chinese acupuncture has a long history of treating dementia, but lack of evidence from well-designed randomized controlled trials that validate its efficacy and safety, as well as its lack of clear underlying mechanisms, contribute to its limited application in clinical practice. In recent years, brain imaging technologies, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography, have been used to assess brain responses to acupuncture ...

The need for surveillance and optimal management of recurrent stenosis after carotid endarterectomy (CEA) or carotid artery stenting (CAS) and whether carotid restenosis is associated with an increased risk of recurrent ipsilateral stroke are controversial.1-3 The recently reported Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) practice guidelines on follow-up after vascular surgery arterial procedures recommend surveillance with Duplex ultrasonography (DUS) after CEA and CAS at baseline, every 6  months for 2 years, and annually thereafter until stable (ie, until no restenosis or in-stent restenosis [ISR] has been observed ...

An 80-year-old man presented 3  years after a mitral valve replacement for mitral insufficiency with a complaint of worsening hemoptysis during the last 1.5 months. A computed tomography scan (Fig 1) to evaluate for malignant disease demonstrated a 0.8×0.7-cm pseudoaneurysm of the ascending aorta, probably related to a previou s cannulation site, which was thought to be the cause of his hemoptysis. He was deemed too high risk for open surgical intervention through redo median sternotomy; therefore, an endovascular approach was sought.
