Alternative Testing Methods Strategy Public Meeting - November 2017

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics (OPPT) is preparing a strategic plan to promote the development and implementation of alternative test methods and strategies for chemical safety testing. This meeting will provide an update on EPA ’ s effort and an opportunity for public comment on the approach, goals, and objectives to consider during development of the plan. The meeting is open to the public with attendance restricted only by the space available, and will also be webcast. It is being co-organized by OPPT and NICEATM. Background On June 22, 2016, the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act was signed into law. The Lautenberg Chemical Safety Act amended the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), the nation ’ s primary chemicals management law. Along with new requirements and deadlines for actions, the new law added a new section to TSCA on reduction of testing on vertebrates, which states that EPA must: “ develop a strategic plan to promote the development and implementation of alternative test methods and strategies to reduce, refine, or replace vertebrate animal testing and provide information of equivalent or better scientific quality and relevance for assessing risks of injury to health or the environment ” OPPT is currently preparing the first draft of the strategic plan and is seeking input from the public as part of this process.
