Texas EMS System Saves Gunshot Patient with Blood Transfusion in the Field

CYPRESS, Texas (KTRK) -- Paramedics with Cypress Creek EMS most likely saved a gunshot patient's life over the weekend. But it was the groundbreaking technique that they used that not only set a milestone, but could also save countless lives across the country. Eyewitness News spoke with Wren Nealy this afternoon. He's the special operations manager for Cypress Creek EMS. Nealy said his agency is now one of only two EMS systems in the country to carry whole blood in the field at all times. "It's a true game changer," said Nealy. "You can bleed out and die within three to five minutes, depending on the severity of the injury. Average response time is eight minutes or less on the good side. The outcome is going to be determined by whoever is present at the scene." Read more...
