Leprosy in pre-Norman Suffolk, UK: biomolecular and geochemical analysis of the woman from Hoxne.

CONCLUSIONS: The confirmation of a new pre-Norman leprosy case in East Anglia is of interest as this is where a high proportion of cases are located. Possible factors for this may include preservation and excavation biases, population density, but also connection and trade, possibly of fur, with the continent. Future research on other British LL cases should focus on exploring these aspects to advance understanding of the disease's history, here and on the continent. ConclusionWe found no evidence that Donders contracted leprosy despite years of intense leprosy contact, but we successfully isolated an archaeological M. leprae aDNA sample from a control skeleton from South America.SignificanceWe successfully genotyped recovered aDNA to a M. leprae strain that likely originated in West Africa. The detected human mitochondrial haplogroup L3 is also associated with this geographical region. This suggests that slave trade contributed to leprosy in Suriname.LimitationsA limited number of skeletons was examined.Suggestions for further researchBroader review of skeletal collections is advised ...

Conclusions: The present study reinforces the importance of measuring the three anti-PGL-1 isotypes in follow-up studies of leprosy contacts. Moreover, positive anti-PGL-1 IgG is associated with a high associated risk of disease.

After the introduction of multidrug therapy (MDT) for leprosy in 1981, there was an impressive reduction in the number of cases worldwide, from an estimated 5.2 million in 1985 to 193  069 in 2017. Approximately 16 million people were treated with MDT, provided free of cost since 1995 by the World Health Organization (WHO). In 2000, the global prevalence dropped below 1 per 10 000 people, an arbitrarily chosen threshold at which it was believed that there would be too few cas es to sustain transmission in the community. This target was subsequently achieved at a national level by nearly all the countries of the world i...

CONCLUSIONS A downward trend for the detection coefficients in the general population and in individuals under 15 years old was found in Maranh ão. Despite this result, the rates are still very high, demanding efforts from all spheres of public administration and health professionals to reduce the burden of the disease in the state.RESUMO OBJETIVO Analisar a tend ência temporal dos indicadores da hanseníase em estado brasileiro hiperendêmico, no período de 2011 a 2015. Conclusion: Between 2010 and 2013, the NLTCP succeeded in increasing the number of TB sputum microscopy laboratories. At most of the TB microscopy sites, the TB laboratory quality system was not implemented. The NLTCP of Liberia should develop strategies to overcome its challenges in TB laboratory testing. This study investigated the effect of the administration of dapsone on the reproductive activities of male rats using in vivo and in vitro techniques. In the in vivo study, dapsone was administered orally to male Wistar rats for 5 days or 6 weeks after which their body weight, relative reproductive organ weights, sperm parameters and reproductive hormones were determined while testicular and epididymal histology were also assessed. Data were compared using analysis of variance and Students-Newman-Keuls multiple comparison test. For the in vitro study, Sertoli cells were cultured and treated with varying doses of dapsone at...
