Risk factors for and role of OprD protein in increasing minimal inhibitory concentrations of carbapenems in clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

CONCLUSION: This difference in the resistance mechanism of P. aeruginosa indicates a critical breakpoint at an imipenem MIC of 8 µg ml(-1), in accordance with EUCAST criteria. Reducing carbapenem use will prevent P. aeruginosa clinical isolates from developing resistance to carbapenems. PMID: 28984565 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

We report here the first case series of elderly JE patients from an adult tertiary hospital in West China. Medical records of laboratory-confirmed JE patients diagnosed from January 2011 to September 2018 were reviewed retrospectively. Patients were grouped into the elderly (patients>50 years old) and control groups (patients aged 14–50 years). Data regarding demographics, clinical features, and outcome at discharge were collected. Telephonic follow-up was performed in the survivors in November 2018. Of the 50 patients with laboratory-confirmed JE, 11 were aged>50 years. In the elderly group, all patients ha...

We present a narrative review of our data on the Tübingen palatal plate (TPP), which show the following: a) in a randomized trial, the TPP was superior to a sham procedure in alleviating UAO; b) children treated with the TPP in infancy showed an intellectual development within the reference range; c) prone positioning is no alternative, as it is ineffective and associated with an increased risk of sudden death; d) the TPP reduces the mixed-obstructive apnea index to near-normal values, both in isolated and most (83%) syndromic RS; e) of 443 infants (129 syndromic) treated with the TPP in our center, 23 ultimately rece...

This report presents a novel technique termed the pharyngeal clearance maneuver, which uses a modified application of the mechanical insufflation-exsufflation device to mobilize “secretion burden” at the portion of the trachea above the tracheostomy cuff during cuff deflation. Utilization of this strategy may reduce the risk of aspiration, infection, and respiratory compromise for patients with high cervical spinal cord injury in the acute rehabilitation setting. It is of particular benefit for those whose cuffs are being deflated for the first time and who may have large secretion volumes above the cuff. It ca...

AbstractA secondary analysis of a prospective multicenter cohort was performed in six intensive care units (ICU) in four European countries (France, Greece, Spain and Turkey). The main objective was to identify factors associated with ventilator-associated events (VAEs) in adults who underwent mechanical ventilation (MV) ≥ 48 h. Secondary objectives were to identify: variables influencing VAE in the subpopulation with endotracheal intubation and in those subjects who were ventilated>  7 days. Subjects who had undergone MV ≥ 48 h were included. In subjects with multiple episodes ...

To pool data from published cases of tracheoinnominate artery fistula (TIF) treated with surgical or endovascular techniques along with reporting a case of similar presentation. 261 cases in 137 published case report and case series were identified through a comprehensive systematic literature review. Data regarding patient characteristics, treatment, and follow-up were extracted. A local case of a 14-year-old boy with TIF due to longstanding tracheostomy treated with stent graft placement was added to the data.

ConclusionThe experiment results revealed that the vascularized VEGF, inflammatory factor expression of IL-1β was restrained by YHD.The UPLC/QTOF-MSE method, an automatic database screening platform and the characteristic MS fragmentation patterns have efficiently facilitated the post data process, so we test for the identification of major components in YHD by this technology, more than seven or more active ingredients, the results showed that YHD contained a total of 55 components, including 11 lignans, 12 flavonoids, 7 tanshinones, 9 organic acid, 5 polyphenols, 4 anthraquinones, 5 senkyunolides and 2 others. Based...

Authors: Toki A, Nakamura T, Nishimura Y, Sumida M, Tajima F Abstract STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. OBJECTIVES: To determine the best time to introduce non-invasive ventilation (NIV), clinical effectiveness of NIV, and complications of long-term use of NIV in patients with high-level cervical spinal cord injuries (CSCI). SETTING: Public Hospital, Japan. METHODS: The subjects were 14 tracheostomy ventilator-dependent patients, with above C3 spinal lesions, and American Spinal Cord Injury Association Impairment Scale A (ASIA A). They were referred to our clinic between 2005 and 2010 for switching mec...
