123 CMRI-assessed left ventricular extra-cellular volume fraction, not left atrial late gadolinium uptake, is related to higher left atrial pressure and increased type 1 collagen telopeptide levels in pre-ablation AF patients

Background: Left atrial (LA) fibrosis assessed by late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) and raised LA pressure predict recurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF) after ablation, however the mechanistic links between LA or left ventricular (LV) fibrosis and AF recurrence are not clear. Using CMR techniques and invasive measurements we tested the hypotheses that LA and LV fibrosis are related to each other, LA pressure, and fibrosis biomarker levels.
