97 Patient self-reported pain and contributing factors during the implant of cardiac implantable electronic devices

Cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) implantation is becoming an increasingly prevalent part of cardiac rhythm management. Patient experience is a key metric by which the delivery of health care is assessed. For CIED implantation, adequate peri-procedural pain management is central to patient experience. Pocket formation is typically uncomfortable  and local anesthethic is not always sufficient. The 2011 Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain Guidelines state that operators should develop techniques that permit the patient to undergo the surgical procedure with minimum stress and maximum comfort. Audit is central to this process, and we have used this as a tool to identify the adequacy of peri-procedural pain management at our centre. We also evaluate factors associated with sub-optimal pain control that have the potential to identify interventions that could further improve the patient experience.
