The government needs to address the impact of scrapping the nursing bursary

Responding to the government’s announcement today (Tuesday) that it will increase the number of training places for nurses, UNISON head of health Sara Gorton said: “It’s about time the government addressed the impact of their decision to scrap the nursing bursary. Young people have been put off training to become nurses because of this shortsighted policy. “UNISON strongly supports apprenticeships for nurses, but these only work if the government provides sufficient support and funding. Only a handful of the new nursing apprenticeships promised by the government last year have actually materialised, because employers say they cost too much. The future of our country’s nursing needs proper investment, not piecemeal handouts.” Media contacts: Clare Santry T: 0207 121 5546 M: 07944 191479 E: c.santry@unison.co.uk Liz Chinchen M: 07778 158175 E: press@unison.co.uk The article The government needs to address the impact of scrapping the nursing bursary first appeared on the UNISON National site.
