Microbial metabolism of senegenic acid and senegenin by Mucor polymorphosporus

Publication date: December 2017 Source:Phytochemistry Letters, Volume 22 Author(s): Hang Liu, Pei Guo, Jizhong Shen, Haixia Zhang, Pengyu Zhuang, Xiufang Duan, Jian Zhou Biotransformation of senegenic acid (1) and senegenin (2) mediated by Mucor polymorphosporus AS 3.3443 produced the corresponding C-21 hydroxylated and oxidized derivatives. These four metabolites were identified as 21β-hydroxyl senegenic acid (3), 21-keto senegenic acid (4), 21α-hydroxyl senegenin (5), and 21-keto senegenin (6), respectively. Among them, compounds 3, 5, and 6 displayed selective neuroprotective effects at a concentration of 10 μM by use of an in vitro bioassay. Graphical abstract
