Starting research early and other "MD/PhD" hacks

1) I was looking into starting research as an M1 and it got me thinking about other ways of trying to get a head start or shortening the training process. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone starts their research as an M1. At my school, we only have two hours of class a day and it leaves a lot of free time. Why not dedicate 10-20 hours a week to research and start working on the PhD portion. That way when you enter the graduate phase, you're already familiar with a lot of the...
