Situational Awareness in Critical Care: An Aviation Approach to Reduce Error

IN THE EVER-CHANGING and increasingly complex health care environment, managing risk to reduce error remains a priority in practice. Fast paced turbulent work environments that demand task-saturated patient care increase the risk of errors.1 The probability of near misses increases with the complexity of caring for patients with numerous comorbidities. Managing the risk of errors requires a coordinated effort by all members of the perianesthesia nursing staff. Health care teams need to use proven strategies to enhance patient safety.
