Aspirin and the prevention of a common disease: Colorectal cancer

Recent strides in cardiovascular medicine have produced an evident prolongation of life. Thus, cancer mortality, the second leading cause of death, is closely rivalling that from circulatory diseases [1]. Death rates from colorectal cancer (CRC) are second only to lung cancer in men and breast cancer in women [1]. North Americans and Europeans are more prone to CRC than the rest of the world, with an estimated lifetime risk of 5% [2]. Adenomas, the precursors of most CRC, are estimated to occur in 20 –50% of Western individuals older than 50years [2].
