Antipsychotic medications can have a significant effect on brain function after only several days of treatment. It is unclear whether such an acute effect can serve as an early predictor for treatment response in schizophrenia. Thirty-two patients with drug-naive, first-episode schizophrenia and 32 healthy controls underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Patients were treated with olanzapine and were scanned at baseline and 1 week of treatment. Healthy controls were scanned once at baseline. Symptom severity was assessed within the patient group using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) ...

Achieving abstinence in schizophrenic smokers using a combination of medications and cognitive behavioral therapy is feasible; however, abstinence rates are significantly lower compared to the general population and studies are scanty. Additionally, maintaining sustained abstinence and preventing relapse is a major limiting factor and represents key tasks in managing tobacco dependence in schizophrenic patients. Several theories have been postulated to explain the higher tendency of tobacco use among schizophrenic individuals. Schizophrenic patients may use nicotine as a “self-medication” strategy to improve ne...

Conclusions: Dopaminergic system may be involved in modulation of grey matter metabolism and neurometabolic coupling in both healthy human brain and psychopathology. Hyperdopaminergic state in untreated schizophrenia may at least partly account for the corresponding decreases in grey matter metabolism. PMID: 31552783 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

CONCLUSIONS: The current study highlights that early prevention of periodontal disease in individuals with schizophrenia is crucial. Along with paying more attention to the development of periodontal disease, assessing oral health regularly, helping with oral hygiene, and lowering consumption of sugary drinks and tobacco, emphasis should also be given by physicians to reduce the prescription of antipsychotics to the extent possible under efficacious pharmacotherapy for schizophrenia. This study demonstrated both impaired gray matter volume and functional activation during WM in schizophrenia, suggesting structural and functional impairments. The structural-functional correlation in schizophrenia suggested that structural damage in schizophrenia might induce a decreased ability to modulate functional response in accordance with increasing task difficulty.

This commentary reflects upon the study of Braga et al of open-label continuation electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) plus clozapine in treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS), as reported in this issue of The Journal of ECT. The evidence base for ECT in TRS is scant, and the study of Braga et al is a step forward. However, their report raises other important questions including (1) what is the proper frequency of continuation ECT in TRS, and (2) should TRS patients, even TRS patients who have failed clozapine, receive acute ECT + clozapine, or is ECT + conventional antipsychotics sufficient? In this commentary, we examine the...

The risk for schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders is higher among refugees than native populations and nonrefugee migrants, suggests areport published today inJAMA Psychiatry.“Refugees do not migrate deliberately but are forced to migrate and have possibly faced traumatic experiences before and during migration,” wrote Lasse Brandt, M.D., of Charité-University Medicine Berlin and colleagues. Migration combined with separation from social networks, social exclusion a nd discrimination, limited access to medical care, poverty, and more may make refugees especially vulnerable to developing mental ill...

We present the first evidence of gray and white matter impairment of right sensorimotor cortico-striatal networks and reproduced the sensorimotor gating deficit in a mouse model of schizophrenia. Significant correlations between gray matter volumes (GMVs) in the somatosensory cortex and PPI as well as glutamate decarboxylase 1 mRNA expression were found in controls but not in knockout mice. Furthermore, these findings were confirmed in a human sample in which we found significantly decreased gray and white matter in sensorimotor cortico-striatal networks in schizophrenic patients. The psychiatric risk alleles of the GABA p...
