Abstract The National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) is considered the standard for assessing neurologic status after an acute stroke. Currently, there is no guideline for when this assessment should be completed, nor is there consensus on how frequently or for how long.We initiated a quality improvement project that sought first to determine when and how often nurses at a variety of institutions in our multisite health care system completed the NIHSS assessment and then to identify the minimum frequency at which nurses should complete the assessment. After reviewing the literature and current practices...

This study investigated the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) combined with conventional swallowing training on the swallowing function in brainstem stroke patients with cricopharyngeal muscle dysfunction (CPD).MethodsTwenty-eight brainstem stroke patients with CPD were assigned randomly to an anodal tDCS group or a sham tDCS group. The patients received anodal tDCS or sham tDCS over the bilateral oesophageal cortical area combined with simultaneous catheter balloon dilatation and conventional swallowing therapy for 20 days. Swallowing function was assessed using the functional oral intake scale (FO...

We present the case of a 68 year-old man who was initially attended in emergency department with sudden onset diplopia. Neurological exploration revealed WEBINO and gait ataxia. Relevant medical history included liver transplantation and subsequent tacrolimus prescription. Complementary exams revealed ischemic lesion in mesencephalic tegmentum, involving medial longitudinal fasciculus and pretectal area. WEBINO syndrome is unfrequent. Among its etiologies, ischemic and demyelinating are the most frequent. In our case, iatrogenic etiology was also considered. Clinical recognition of this syndrome is required to perform adeq...

Aberrant epigenetic changes may result from alterations in enzymatic activities, which are responsible for putting in and/or out the covalent groups, altering the epigenome and then modulating gene expression. The identification of novel individual epigenetic-sensitive trajectories at single cell level might pro...
