CONCLUSION: NMDA receptor antagonists, especially amantadine, may ameliorate SCI by inducing angiogenesis, affecting inflammation and apoptosis. It inhibits oxidative stress and the signaling pathways following SCI in rats. PMID: 32091112 [PubMed - in process]

The American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine (ACRM) offers an opportunity for members to be the guest editor of a Supplement to its journal, the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (Archives). The goal of the ACRM supplements is to publish high quality scientific manuscripts, which are thematically organized and of interest to ACRM members and to the general readership of the Archives. We are interested in proposals in all fields of rehabilitation, but especially those of interest to the ACRM membership as indicated by the existence of special interest and networking groups for brain injury, spinal cord in...

Nature Reviews Neurology, Published online: 25 February 2020; doi:10.1038/s41582-020-0311-0Few therapies for spinal cord injury (SCI) have successfully reached the clinic, owing to the complex nature of the injury. This Review highlights two potential new multi-target therapeutic strategies for SCI: olfactory mucosa-derived mesenchymal stromal cells and heparan sulfate mimetics.

Manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI) relies on the strong paramagnetism of Mn2+. Mn2+ is a calcium ion analog and can enter excitable cells through voltage-gated calcium channels. Mn2+ can be transported along the axons of neurons via microtubule-based fast axonal transport. Based on these properties, MEMRI is used to describe neuroanatomical structures, monitor neural activity, and evaluate axonal transport rates. The application of MEMRI in preclinical animal models of central nervous system (CNS) diseases can provide more information for the study of disease mechanisms. In this article, we provide a bri...

In conclusion, taller body height at the entry to adulthood, supposed to be a marker of early-life environment, is associated with lower risk of dementia diagnosis later in life. The association persisted when adjusted for educational level and intelligence test scores in young adulthood, suggesting that height is not just acting as an indicator of cognitive reserve. A Comparison of Biological Age Measurement Approaches Researchers here assess the performance of a range of approaches to measuring biological...

Authors: Fogarty MJ, Sieck GC Abstract Introduction: Neuromotor control of diaphragm muscle and the recovery of diaphragm activity following spinal cord injury has been narrowly focused on ventilation. By contrast, the understanding of neuromotor control for non-ventilatory expulsive/straining maneuvers (including coughing, defecation and parturition) is relatively impoverished. This variety of behaviours is achieved via the recruitment of the diverse array of motor units that comprise the diaphragm muscle.Areas covered: The neuromotor control of ventilatory and non-ventilatory behaviors in health and in the contex...

ConclusionOur results demonstrate that either Endomorphin-1 or CGRP receptor antagonist is able to decrease the neuropathic pain after SCI but combination therapy by a CGRP receptor antagonist and Endomorphin-1 did not make any further reduction in pain sensation.

CONCLUSION: We conclude that CEUS has the spatial and temporal sensitivity and resolution to visualize local tissue perfusion and vessel architecture, which maybe useful clinically to determine injury extent and severity in patients with SCI. PMID: 32074323 [PubMed - in process]
