Conclusion: Based on experimental evidence and some relevant clinical observations, metformin seems to be a promising drug in the treatment of progressive renal damage. RCT studies are the next essential step.Nephron
Conclusion: Sertoli cell function, based on AMH and inhibin B levels, does not improve to the same extent or as fast as Leydig cell function after kidney transplantation, as determined by testosterone and LH levels.Nephron
[Guardian] Umuahia -Thursday and Friday, December 7 and 8, 2017 will ever remain remarkable and memorable in the South East medical sector as the days the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Umuahia in Abia state successfully transplanted two kidneys harvested from their separate donors in the hospital.
When a patient receives a kidney transplant, there is a possibility that their body will reject this new organ and a variety of treatments are used to try to prevent this. However, these treatments can cause their own unwanted side effects. In a new Cochrane Review in July 2017, Krishna Karpe and colleagues from Canberra Hospital in Australia looked at the evidence for alleviating this for the group of drugs known as Calcineurin inhibitors. Here ’s Krishna to tell us what they found.

Objectives Simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplant (SPK) is the most effective treatment for patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus and renal failure. However, the effect of ethnicity on SPK outcomes is not well understood. Methods We studied the influence of recipient ethnicity on SPK using the United Network for Organ Sharing database. A retrospective review of 20,196 SPK patients from 1989 to 2014 was performed. The recipients were divided into 4 groups: 15,833 whites (78.40%), 2708 African Americans (AA) (14.39%), 1456 Hispanics (7.21%), and 199 Asians (0.99%). Results Hispanics and Asians experienced the b...
Background and Aim: Data are scanty on allocating simultaneous liver kidney (SLK) based on model for end-stage disease (MELD) score. Diabetes mellitus (DM) and hypertension (HTN) are frequent in cirrhosis patients. We analyzed transplant recipients with DM and/or HTN to compare MELD-based outcomes of SLK to liver transplantation alone (LTA). Materials and Methods: Of 13,584 first deceased donor liver transplantation among patients with DM and/or HTN (1530 or 11.2% SLK), MELD score predicted SLK [1.02 (1.01-1.03)]. SLK was beneficial for 5-year patient survival at MELD score ≥43 (78.6% vs. 62.6%, P=0.017), but not at MELD score
