This study aimed to determine the cytotoxic, genotoxic and to elucidate the signaling pathway involved in the death cell process induced by cis-[RuCl(BzCN)(bipy)(dppb)]PF6(1) and cis-[RuCl(BzCN)(bipy)(dppe)]PF6(2) in Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) in vitro. Moreover, we report for the first time the anti-angiogenic potential on chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) model. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were isolated from healthy controls with an age range of 20-30 years and used to calculate the selectivity index (SI). The complex 2 (IC50 = 8.5 ± 0.4/SI = 6.3) sho...

This study aimed to investigate the pathogenesis and molecular mechanism of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) in severely monocrotophos-poisoned rabbits. METHODS: Chinchilla rabbits were used to build the monocrotophos-poisoned animal model via subcutaneous abdominal injection. Acetylcholinesterase activity was determined using the dithiobisnitrobenzoic acid enzyme kinetics method, and the free organophosphorus (FOP) toxic substances content was analyzed using the enzyme inhibition method. The contents of tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), interleukin 1-β (IL-β) and thromboxane B2 (TXB2) in the pl...

Abstract Hydroquinone (HQ), a major metabolite of benzene, exists in many plant-derived food and products. Although many studies have addressed biological properties of HQ including the regulation of immune responses and antioxidant activity, neuroprotective effects of HQ following ischemic insults have not yet been considered. Therefore, in this study, we examined neuroprotective effects of HQ against ischemic damage in the gerbil hippocampal cornu ammonis 1 (CA1) region following 5 min of transient cerebral ischemia. We found that pre- and post-treatments with 50 and 100 mg/kg of HQ protected CA1 pyram...

The objective was to investigate if a cross-over design can be used to study these effects in a school setting. Therefore, in order to investigate assay sensitivity, 236 Swedish children aged 10-12 years were administered either a berry smoothie (active) or a fruit-based control beverage after their mid-morning break. Both beverages provided 5% of child daily energy intake. In total, 91% of participants completed the study. Academic performance was assessed using the d2 test of attention. Statistical analyses were performed using the Wilcoxon signed rank test in StatXact v 10.3. The results showed that the children co...

CONCLUSION: At-home use of chlorhexidine gluconate wipes did not decrease the topical bacterial burden. Therefore, using chlorhexidine gluconate wipes at home before surgery may offer no added benefit. This is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives License 4.0 (CCBY-NC-ND), where it is permissible to download and share the work provided it is properly cited. Authors: Afonso E, Lizy C, Blot S Abstract Impact Statement: Bridging the knowledge-practice gap remains a challenge in infection prevention as attitude and culture need to change as well. A formal structure of continuing education might serve that goal. PMID: 29228884 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

CONCLUSIONS: Nurses chose to work in a medical school for a variety of reasons, with a common aspiration was to investigate and improve health care delivery, treatment and outcomes. These nurses sought to maintain their identity as nurses, described using nursing skills and recognised they contributed to interprofessional practice in the medical school. The nursing profession however often did not recognise them as nurses and did not seek to understand their roles. Although individual medical school colleagues recognised the value of nurses working in medical schools, organisationally, limited attention was afforded to the...
