Incidence of chronic post-surgical pain and its associated factors in patients taken to inguinal hernia repair

According to this study, the use of peri-operative analgesia together with pain prevention and management within the first post-operative weeks help prevent the development of chronic post-surgical pain. General anaesthesia may increase the risk. Similar studies conducted at a larger scale could help identify other associated factors.

Background: Despite the critical role that Emergency Medical Services (EMS) provides in the health care system, racial/ethnic treatment disparities in EMS remain relatively unexamined. Objective: To investigate racial/ethnic treatment disparities in pain assessment and pain medication administration in EMS. Research Design: A retrospective analysis was performed on 25,732 EMS encounters from 2015 to 2017 recorded in the Oregon Emergency Medical Services Information System using multivariate logistic regression models to examine the role of patient race/ethnicity in pain assessment and pain medication administration...

Abstract Retrospective analysis has already shown correlation between severe Chronic Periodontitis (CP) cases with human papiloma virus (HPV). Hence, we aimed to explore deep-seated infected granulation tissue removed during periodontal flap surgery procedures for residential bacterial species between HPV+ and HVP- CP cases, which may serve as good predisposition marker for oral cancer. All CP-granulation samples showed the prominence of Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes phyla with an abundance of gram negative anaerobes, except Streptococcus. In Beta diversity nonmetric multidimensional scaling plot, ...

Authors: Zhang Y, Li L, Xu Y, Zhao X, Li F Abstract The regeneration of the skin is vital to our wound healing and skin repair abilities. Adult epidermal stem cells (ESCs) have been shown to have the potential to renew old and dead skin cells, and ESCs have been implemented in stem cell-based therapies. GPR30 is a G protein-coupled membrane receptor for oestrogen, which has been shown to regulate cell proliferation and programmed cell death. Here, we examined the biological function of GPR30 in isolated adult murine ESCs. We show that GPR30 is fairly expressed in ESCs and is repressed upon ultraviolet B (UV-B) trea...

Pais, Catarina Cardoso, Carla VitorinoAbstractThe EMA draft guideline on quality and equivalence of topical products and the FDA non-binding product specific guidances release has encouraged the establishment of a regulatory background for in vitro release testing (IVRT). Herein, a novel framework applicable to the development of a discriminatory IVRT method is described, according to analytical quality by design (aQbD) principles. A commercially available diclofenac emulgel formulation w...

This study aimed to determine the effects of back massage on postoperative vital signs, pain, and comfort levels in liver transplant patients.MethodsA quasi-experimental model with a pretest, a posttest, and a control group was used. The population of the study comprised adult patients who had liver transplantation for the first time. The study sample comprised 84 adult patients who had liver transplantation: 42 experimental (study group) and 42 control group, selected by power analysis and the random sampling method from the population. The data were collected between May and September 2016 using the short-form McGill Pai...

ConclusionsThe ability of AVATAR to obviate the need for daily anesthesia in pediatric RT provides substantial cost-savings. These findings argue for increased utilization of AVATAR and for analyses of RT targeting the accuracy of AVATAR versus conventional anesthesia-guided treatment of pediatric malignancies.

CONCLUSION: Patients recovered well after TEP repair with a good quality of life and fast restore of function. Patient well-being was lower than expected due to a 14% incidence of chronic pain. The COMI-hernia scale provided reasonable insight into the patients' experience, though it was difficult to interpret for both patient and physician. ConclusionsThe incidence of chronic inguinal pain is a common though underexposed complication after kidney transplantation. More awareness to prevent neuropathic pain seems indicated.
