Severe Hypertriglyceridemia Possibly Masked Acute Pancreatitis and Led to a Difficult Diagnosis in an Obese Patient with Ketoacidosis-onset Type 2 Diabetes. Intern Med. 2017 Sep 06;: Authors: Fujishiro M, Horita A, Nakagawara H, Mawatari T, Kishigami Y, Tominaga Y, Moriyama M, Ishihara H Abstract A young obese man with ketoacidosis-onset type 2 diabetes mellitus, associated with severe hypertriglyceridemia, was admitted to a local hospital complaining of abdominal pain. Although the abdominal pain worsened, his serum amylase level remained normal with persistent severe hypertriglyceridemia until the second day of hospitalization. The next day, computed tomography showed severe acute pancreatitis (AP) with serum amylase elevation, while the patient's triglyceride level decreased to 558 mg/dL. He was transferred to our hospital and recovered after intensive care. AP accompanied by diabetic ketoacidosis is not rare but an early diagnosis can be difficult to make due to normal amylase levels in the presence of severe hypertriglyceridemia. This study aimed to determine the effect of the consumption of peel flour or pulp flour from two varieties of Solanum tuberosum (Yungay potato and Canchán potato) on the accumulation of adipose tissue, organ weight, and oxidative stress in the liver of rats. We carried out an experimental study in 24 obese Holtzman rats, divided into four groups and subjected to diets containing 10% flour from both varieties of potato. The groups were T1: Yungay peel; T2: Yungay pulp; T3: Canchán peel; and T4: Canchán pulp. When the study was completed, all the animals were slaughtered to record the weights of organs a...

Authors: Lancellotti P, De Pauw M, Claeys M Abstract Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer represent the two main causes of death in industrialised countries. Both share common risk factors (diabetes, obesity, hypertension, diet, smoking, etc.). The associated timing of CVD and cancer onset is thus largely influenced by modifiable risk factors. Advances in cancer treatment have extended the lives of patients with cancer, but for some at the cost of adverse cardiovascular events. The rapidly growing number of patients surviving cancer, often in the setting of advanced age, new or pre-existing CV disease and risk f...

AbstractOsteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic joint disease that leads to pain and functional incapacity. The aim of the study is to investigate the effects of the incorporation of photobiomodulation (PBM) (via cluster) into a physical exercise program on the level of pain, lower limb muscle strength, and physical capacity, in patients with knee OA. Sixty-two female volunteers with a diagnosis of knee OA were distributed in 4 groups: exercise associated with placebo PBM group, exercise associated with active PBM group, active PBM group, and placebo PBM group. Sixteen sessions of lower limb strength exercises and PBM via cluster...

METHODS: A retrospective analysis of data stored in a database for esophageal cancer was carried out to identify predictors of postoperative pulmonary complications in patients undergoing McKeown esophagectomy at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center between 2010 and 2012. RESULTS: Patients in the OLV ⩾150 minutes group had a higher incidence of postoperative pulmonary complication...

Authors: Liu J, Yang L Abstract Effects of propofol and sevoflurane on blood glucose, hemodynamics, and inflammatory factors of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and gastric cancer (GC) were investigated. One hundred and ten patients with T2DM and GC, treated in The First Affiliated Hospital of Baotou Medical College (Baotou, China) from January 2017 to December 2018, were selected. Sixty patients anesthetized by propofol were included in the propofol group, whereas 50 patients anesthetized by sevoflurane were included in the sevoflurane group. The level of blood glucose, hemodynamic indicators, and inf...

CONCLUSIONS: HSV may induce perianal infections, anal infections and HSV proctitis. Diagnosis of HSV1 and HSV2 using PCR is recommended. Anal and genital HSV infections are a risk factor for subsequent HIV infection. The risk is higher for HSV2 infection due to more frequent recurrences. Authors: Wagner N, Kamann S, Oppel E Abstract The design and development of insulin pumps and various glucose sensor systems has an enormous impact on life quality of diabetic patients. Surveillance and therapy of diabetes has improved due to the new diabetic devices, which are affixed to the patients' skin for several days. Since their introduction, irritant and allergic contact dermatitis have been frequently reported. Patients often acquire contact sensitization to isobornyl acrylate, N,N-dimethylacrylamide or formerly to 2‑ethyl-cyanoacrylate. These contact allergens were found in the patch, in the glue to af...
