Lead Poisoning at an Indoor Firing Range.

This report represents the first occupational case of lead poisoning in firing ranges in Korea, and this necessitates institutional management to prevent the recurrence of poisoning through this route. Workplace environmental monitoring should be implemented for indoor firing ranges, and the workers should undergo regularly scheduled special health examinations. In clinical practice, it is essential to question the patient about his occupational history. PMID: 28875619 [PubMed - in process]

In a blockbuster investigation carried out along with the Washington Post, 60 Minutes’ Bill Whitaker looks into allegations that powerful pharmaceutical distributors helped advance the current opioid crisis by fulfilling patently suspicious orders for prescription opioids. The piece cites one example where a pharmacy in a West Virginia town with a population of several hundred ordered and received millions of opioid pills. The main source for the piece is Joe Rannazzisi, former head of the Drug Enforcement Agency’s Office of Diversion Control. Rannazzisi charges that as his office was planning to prosecute some...

Conclusions: The sharp increase in opioid-related stays overall during the transition to ICD-10-CM may indicate that the new classification system is capturing stays that were missed by ICD-9-CM data. Estimates of stays involving other diagnoses may also be affected, and analysts should assess potential discontinuities in trends across the ICD transition.
