Abstract Familial risks of breast cancer (BC) are well established but whether BC clusters with other, i.e. discordant, cancers is less certain but of interest for the identification of common genetic and possible environmental factors contributing to a general cancer susceptibility. We apply a novel approach to search for familial associations of BC with other (discordant) cancers based on the Swedish Family‐Cancer Database. Relative risks (RRs) were calculated for BC in families with increasing numbers of patients with discordant cancer X, and conversely, familial RRs for cancer X in families with increasing numbers of...

V‐set and immunoglobulin domain containing 1 (VSIG1) is a newly discovered member of the immunoglobulin superfamily of proteins, expressed in normal stomach and testis. In cancers, however, the clinical and biological roles of VSIG1 remain unknown. Here we investigated VSIG1 expression in 11 cancers and assessed the prognostic roles of VSIG1 in patients with gastric cancer (GC) (n = 362) and non‐small‐cell lung cancer (n = 650). V‐set and immunoglobulin domain containing 1 was downregulated in 60.5% of GC specimens, and high VSIG1 expression was identified as an independent favorable prognostic factor for overall s...

Conclusion: The study showed that 18F- FDG PET/CT may be a sensitive and effective method in detecting the causes of only elevated serum CA125 levels in tumor markers in male patients and tuberculosis was one of the main causes of CA125 elevation in male patients. CONCLUSIONSThe cancer incidence profile of ABs is different from that of USBs and varies by region of birth, suggesting differences in environmental, cultural, social, and genetic factors. The findings of the current study could stimulate etiologic research and help to inform targeted interventions. Cancer 2017. © 2017 American Cancer Society.

AbstractThe Druze are a small ethnic minority in Israel amounting to about 130,000 residents (or 1.7  % of the total population of the country). Unlike other population groups, the Druze strive to keep their own traditions and marry mainly inside their own community. During the last decade, cancer morbidity among both Jews and Arabs in Israel has been increasing, while data on the Druze are little known and have not been analyzed and compared to other population groups to date. To compare cancer morbidity rates among Druze, Arabs and Jews in Israel during 1999–2009, gender-specific and age-standardized incidence...

Publication date: Available online 14 February 2017 Source:Pharmacology & Therapeutics Author(s): Jin Tae Hong, Dong Ju Son, Chong Kil Lee, Do-Young Yoon, Dong Hun Lee, Mi Hee Park Interleukin-32 (IL-32) is a novel cytokine involved in inflammation and cancer development. IL-32 gene consists of eight small exons, and IL-32 mRNA has nine alternative spliced isoforms, and was thought to be secreted because it contains an internal signal sequence and lacks a transmembrane region. IL-32 is initially expressed selectively in activated T cells by mitogen and activated NK cells and their expression is strongly augmented by m...

Thoracic surgeon Dr. Raja Flores, like so many other patriotic Americans, rushed to help after the horrific 9/11 terrorist attack at the World Trade Center (WTC) in New York City. As the world prepares to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Flores’ work is far from done. While the memory of that fateful Sept. 11, 2001, is beginning to fade for many, the threat of a resulting and significant rise in mesothelioma cancer is looming large on the horizon. The alarming number of future mesothelioma cases will stem from the weeks-long rescue and cleanup efforts performed under the toxic cloud that containe...
