Looking to the future: Introducing palliative care in the cardiorespiratory population

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the recent Heart& Lung issue (Jan/Feb 2017) that focused on palliative care. In particular, I found the historical perspective by Grady.1 to be of great interest as a current PhD student, palliative care clinician, and novice nurse researcher. While Grady eloquently described the contributions of nursing science to palliative care, I was struck by the reoccurring question of timing of palliative care services. While evidence is mounting concerning the benefit of palliative care in symptom burden, quality of life, and advance care planning, questions of timing still remain as evidenced in the issue with the intensive care unit study by Seaman et  al.
