Mean Corpuscular Volume Evaluation for Differential Diagnosis of Myelodysplastic Syndrome and Megaloblastic Anemia: A Study of 130 Patients

The causes of macrocytic anemia are vitamin B12 and folate deficiencies (megaloblastic anemia), medications, alcoholism, hypothyroidism, and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). MDS and megaloblastic anemia cannot be easily distinguished from a current medical history or general blood tests. In addition, in some hospitals it takes time to examine vitamin B12, folate, WT1 mRNA, and bone marrow to diagnose this disease.
