The Impact of the Microbiome on Infectious Outcomes in Patients with Hematologic Malignancy

Patients with hematologic malignancy are at high risk for serious infections. The vast majority of infections arise from organisms that are colonizing the gastrointestinal tract which gain access to sterile sites via disrupted epithelial barriers. There is an emerging understanding that the ability of bacterial pathogens, including multidrug resistant organisms, to colonize and subsequently infect patients with hematologic malignancy is largely dependent on protective bacterial species present in the gastrointestinal tract, aka the microbiome.
