We report 2 cases of severe babesiosis initially mistaken as malaria. The first patient was complicated by shock and splenic infarction, the other co-infected with Lyme disease. As the population traveling abroad increases every year, physicians should be aware of babesiosis which mimics malaria, co-infection with other diseases, and its complications. Bashor, Felicia Keesing, Kathleen LoGiudice, Richard S. OstfeldAbstractTick microbiomes may play an important role in pathogen transmission. However, the drivers of microbiome variation are poorly understood, and this limitation has impeded mechanistic understanding of the functions of microbial communities for pathogen acquisition. The goal of this research was to characterize the role of the blood meal host in structuring the microbiome of Ixodes scapularis, the ...

In this study, we investigated tick-borne bacterial pathogens in wild boar, hare, and fox and their ticks in Turkey. A total of 102 tick pools comprised of 445 ticks and blood samples were analyzed for the presence of bacterial DNA by PCRs targeted rickettsial gltA and ompA genes, 5S-23S rDNA gene for Borrelia spp., and msp4 gene for Anaplasma spp. As a result of PCR and sequence analyses, three pathogenic spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae, two SFG rickettsiae with unknown pathogenicity and one pathogenic Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato were detected in samples obtained from wild animals. Rickettsia slovaca was detecte...

Abstract It is still under investigation, whether all Borrelia sp. causing Lyme borreliosis and other diseases are already identified and properly classified as human pathogens. For this reason, it is of great importance to develop a diagnostic ELISA test that detects all Borrelia sp. The aim of this study was to identify conserved DNA and protein regions present in all currently known Borrelia sp. In experimental studies 31 available Borrelia sp. genomes were aligned and screened for the presence of evolutionary conserved regions. As a result of bioinformatics analysis, one evolutionally conserved DNA region enco...

Purpose of review To review the clinical diagnosis, management and natural history of septic arthritis of the hip (SAH) in the pediatric patient, and to highlight new information that may improve the management of these patients. Recent findings The basics of management of possible pediatric SAH have remained largely unchanged for generations. New questions have been raised regarding the role and timing of advanced imaging (MRI) in the evaluation of patients with possible SAH. Published criteria have been derived to guide the need for MRI studies in these patients. Validation of these guidelines continues. Recent revi...
