Epigenetic stress response and stem cell aging

Adult tissue stem cells contribute to the lifelong maintenance of 0rgan homeostasis and regeneration. However, the functionality of stem cells declines during aging and there is emerging evidence for the clonal dominance of mutant stem cells. Both processes contribute to the evolution of aging associated dysfunctions and diseases but molecular mechanisms that impair the function of stem cells during aging remain incompletely understood. Our recent work revealed that alterations in epigenetic stress responses lead to an aberrant activation of developmental pathways that impair the self renewal and regenerative capacity of muscle stem cells.
