Differences in the impairment of insight between deficit syndrome and non-deficit syndrome patients with first-episode schizophrenia

Up to one-third of individuals with schizophrenia may have deficit syndrome (DS; L ópez-Díaz et al., in press). These subjects with primary, enduring negative symptoms have more severe cognitive impairments than do non-deficit syndrome (NDS) patients (Bora et al., 2017). Although several studies suggest DS patients have a greater lack of insight than NDS patients (Ekinci et al., 2012; Kirkpatrick et al., 2000; Kösger et al., 2014; Pegoraro et al., 2013; Trotman et al., 2011), evidence of these differences in subjects with first-episode schizophrenia (FES) remains scarce (Trotman et al., 2011).
