Increased prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii seropositivity in patients with treatment-resistant schizophrenia

Treatment response to antipsychotics is highly variable, ranging from functional remission to treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS). In spite of compelling evidence that infection with Toxoplasma gondii (TG) increases the likelihood of schizophrenia (Sutterland et al., 2015) and influences its clinical presentation (Esshili et al., 2016), there is no data whether TG infection relates to treatment-resistance. This cross-sectional study investigated the association of TRS with TG seropositivity and with different demographic and clinical features in 210 inpatients aged 18 to 65years, diagnosed (according to DSM-IV criteria) with schizophrenia for at least 5years.
