Schizophrenia and psychosis: Does changing the label change the beliefs?

Renaming schizophrenia has been proposed as a potential strategy to reduce stigma and discrimination against people with this disorder (Lasalvia and Tansella, 2013; Keshavan et al., 2013). Two recent reviews have extensively examined the effects of the proposed changes on stigma-related outcomes. Lasalvia et al. (2015) concluded that the advantages of renaming schizophrenia far outweigh the disadvantages. Yamaguchi et al. (2017) reported that in countries where schizophrenia had been officially renamed there were improvements in adults' attitudes and increases in the announcement of the diagnosis.
