Prophylactic Cranial Irradiation for Small Cell Lung Cancer: New Insights
In this edition of Oncology Scan, we review recent literature that raises new questions on the topic of prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) for small cell lung cancer. Prophylactic cranial irradiation has been considered a standard component of treatment for both limited-stage (LS) and extensive-stage (ES) small cell lung cancer (SCLC) on the basis of high-level evidence demonstrating survival benefits. In 1999, a large meta-analysis pooled individual patient data from 987 LS-SCLC patients in complete remission treated on 7 trials conducted between 1977 and 1994 with a randomization between PCI a nd observation (1).
