Working toward changing the Duration of Untreated Psychosis (DUP)

The Duration of Untreated Psychosis (DUP) is a measure of public health relevance. This should not surprise anyone familiar with the tortuous journeys that individuals and their families must often undertake to engage with available treatment. The time between the onset of florid psychosis (however defined) and the receipt of treatment (of various standards, and in various settings) is robustly associated with a broad range of relevant outcomes (Marshall et al., 2005; Perkins et al., 2005). But is DUP a modifiable prognostic marker or a mere confound that travels with poor prognosis Schizophrenia? (McGlashan, 1999).
