Abstract BACKGROUND: Gastrostomy tube (G-tube) placement is a long-term alternative to oral or nasogastric feeding for premature infants who cannot safely feed orally or need supplemental nutrition for adequate growth. METHODS: We compared daily weight changes for G-tube infants 14 and 30 days preplacement and postplacement, excluding the first 7 days post-G-tube insertion. Infants

Purpose of review To review recent literature on the management of patients with severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) admitted to an ICU. Recent findings SAP is a devastating disease associated with a high morbidity and mortality. Recent evidence advocates adequate risk assessment and severity prediction (including intra-abdominal pressure monitoring), tailored fluid administration favoring balanced crystalloids, withholding prophylactic antibiotic therapy, and early detection and treatment of extra-pancreatic and fungal infections. Urgent (within 24–48 h after diagnosis) endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatogra...

This study compared the effectiveness and safety of C-GF vs B-GF in intubated pediatric patients. METHODS: We enrolled randomized patients aged 1 month-12 years who were intubated within 24 hours and received EN starting within 48 hours of admission to a C-GF or B-GF group. Goal-directed EN volume and caloric density were increased every 3 and 12 hours, respectively, to target. Feeding interruptions and intolerance events were recorded. RESULTS: Twenty-five subjects were enrolled (B-GF = 11; C-GF = 14). At 24 hours, B-GF was associated with higher energy and protein delivery (P

We describe a 28-year-old healthy male who presented with acute abdominal pain a few hours after a routine esophagogastrodudenoscopy with biopsies was performed. Following an otherwise uneventful endoscopy, he developed a gastric outlet obstruction and pancreatitis secondary to an IDH. The patient was managed conservatively. Resolution of his gastric outlet obstruction occurred immediately after gentle passage of the endoscope through the narrowed duodenal lumen.Case Rep Gastroenterol 2018;12:692 –698

ConclusionsLong-term management of malignancy-associated bowel obstruction is possible with improvement in quality of life using a combination of TPN and a cervical esophagostomy tube. In these two cases the cervical esophagostomy tube was placed with limited adverse events, and adequate drainage of intestinal secretions long-term.

Rationale: Head and neck cancer patients with a nasogastric tube struggle to meet their full energy and protein requirements during the first postoperative days. The aim was to examine if 100% coverage of estimated energy and protein requirements from the first postoperative day would decrease the incidence of postoperative complications without adverse effects for the patient.

Abstract BACKGROUND: Pasteurized donor milk is the recommended supplement for preterm infants when mother's milk volumes are insufficient. Compared with mother's milk, the macronutrient content of donor milk is thought to be lower due to pasteurization and additional container changes during processing. Given that poor growth is concerning for preterm infants, it is important to understand how processing and feeding methods influence the nutrition composition of donor milk feeds. The research aim of this study was to determine the effects of pasteurization and feeding method on the macronutrient and energy composi...

European and international guidelines advice against initiating tube-feeding in patients with severe dementia. These recommendations are based on studies with important methodological limitations that evaluated the benefits of artificial nutrition in patients with percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy almost exclusively in terms of the prolongation of survival. The aims of this study were to assess the harmful effects of home enteral nutrition administered via the nasogastric tube and percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy in patients with advanced dementia in terms of mechanical, gastrointestinal and metabolic complications, t...
