The Global Alliance for Infections in Surgery: defining a model for antimicrobial stewardship —results from an international cross-sectional survey

Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs (ASPs) have been promoted to optimize antimicrobial usage and patient outcomes, and to reduce the emergence of antimicrobial-resistant organisms. However, the best strategies...

KochAbstractHypophysitis is a heterogeneous condition that leads to inflammation of the sella and/or suprasellar region, potentially resulting in hormonal deficiencies and/or mass effects. A preponderance of hypophysitis subtypes have an underlying autoimmune aetiology. The overall incidence and prevalence of hypophysitis has dramatically increased over the past decade, mainly due to increased awareness of the condition in...

Autoimmune hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) diseases induced by checkpoint inhibitors are being increasingly recognized. We aimed to characterize the spectrum of checkpoi...

CONCLUSIONS: PORD is a complex disorder with many possible mutations affecting a large number of enzymes. By analysing the cohort of reported PORD cases, this study identified clear relationships between genotype and several important phenotypic features. In conclusion, we described, for the first time, a case series of nivolumab-induced adrenal insufficiency in patients with mRCC. Our findings may be useful for the accurate diagnosis and the prompt treatment of this condition. In addition, there is a possibility that adrenal insufficiency may be associated with a favorable response to nivolumab in patients with mRCC.

In this report, we present a 4-year-old female patient with Addison's disease and end-stage renal failure secondary to focal sclerosing glomerulosclerosis. Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis had been performed, and 3 months later, the patient developed fever, diarrhea, and vomiting. Peritoneal fluid culture and dialysis fluid culture were positive for W. virosa. It was identified with Phoenix (BD, USA) and confirmed via 16S rRNA sequencing. It cannot be identified by Maldi Biotyper (Bruker). The isolate was found to be resistant to cephalosporins, ciprofloxacin, and amikacin by gradient test. Intraperitoneal cefepim...

This study was performed to find out the prevalence of RAI in decompensated cirrhotic patients presenting with hepatic encephalopathy and variceal bleeding without any evidence of infection. METHODS: The study prospectively included 75 cirrhotic patients with signs of decompensation. The short Synacthen test (SST) was performed on all patients after ruling out infection. Patients with positive blood, urine, sputum, ascitic and pleural fluid cultures or evidence of infection on chest X-ray and those with elevated procalcitonin levels (>0.05 ng/ml) were excluded. RAI in critical illness was defined by a delta cortisol...

Publication date: Available online 4 December 2019Source: Aquatic ToxicologyAuthor(s): Addison T. Ochs, Jeffrey D. Shields, Gary W. Rice, Michael A. UngerAbstractManganese (Mn) is a hypoxic reactive metal commonly found in marine sediments. Under hypoxic conditions the metal becomes fully reduced to Mn2+ and is biologically available to the benthic community for uptake. Mn is also a potent neurotoxin and it may play a role in the etiology of idiopathic blindness that has been observed in American lobsters. An acute study was designed to expose American lobster, Homarus americanus, to 0, 20, 80, 150, and 300 mg&thins...
