Publication date: Available online 29 July 2017 Source:Environmental Toxicology and Pharmacology Author(s): Salvatore Chirumbolo, Geir Bjørklund The recent news about the US President Donald Trump's tweet on the presumptive relationship between vaccines and autism published in Nature Seven Days (Nature, n 542, Feb 16th, 2017 p 276) raised a crowded outcry of criticisms and concerns not only about the US President's policy but on the safety of vaccines, putting again in the spotlight this fundamental medical issue.Aside from the provocative boutade of the US President, with echoes also in Italy, the scientific community should expand the debate by preventing any prejudicial neglecting of controversial about vaccines to approach an in-depth and insightful research on the effect of environment on the immune response to vaccines. This may represent a serious concern for those populations usually living in highly polluted geographical areas and needing to be vaccinated against endemic infectious diseases. Furthermore, in civilized and industrialized countries, this issue is under-estimated due to people trusting the quality of healthcare services performance, usually renowned for their very high medical excellence. The purpose is to use vaccines with the greatest impact on the public immune surveillance but having the best enhancement in their safety and immune coverage.
