Objectives Faced with the AIDS epidemic and many sexually transmitted infections, condoms are a better and lasting prevention strategy. However, the sexually active population of Burundi uses much less this type of prevention. This explains in part why the prevalence of these diseases remains higher in this population. The objective of this article is to highlight the reasons for the low condom use by the population of Burundi. Method Analysis of the review of the local and international literature on HIV and condom use. Results The main factors of non-use of condoms are the following: condoms diminish sexual pleasure, they are troublesome, they create suspicions between known partners and are not reliable. Also, when sexual intercourse takes place according to the encounters, often the condom does not find its place. Moreover, for a majority of Burundians, condoms would only be useful if they were occasional partners. But if it is a more or less durable bond, it is not used.
