Study of chronic kidney disease-mineral bone disorders in newly detected advanced renal failure patients: A Hospital-based cross-sectional study.

Study of chronic kidney disease-mineral bone disorders in newly detected advanced renal failure patients: A Hospital-based cross-sectional study. Saudi J Kidney Dis Transpl. 2017 Jul-Aug;28(4):874-885 Authors: Etta PK, Sharma RK, Gupta A Abstract We aim to evaluate the disturbances in mineral metabolism, abnormalities in bone mineral density (BMD), and extraskeletal calcification in newly detected, untreated predialysis stage 4 and 5 chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients at a tertiary care hospital in North India. This is cross-sectional observational study. A total of 95 (68 males, 27 females) newly detected patients underwent clinical evaluation, biochemical assessment [serum calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), albumin, creatinine, intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), 25- hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D)], BMD measurement (at spine, hip, and forearm) by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), lateral abdominal radiograph [for abdominal aortic calcification (AAC)], skeletal survey (to look for any abnormality including fractures), and echocardiography [for any cardiac valvular calcification (CVC)]. Symptoms related to CKD-mineral bone disorder were seen in 33.6% of the study patients. Prevalence of hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, hyperparathyroidism, and hypovitaminosis D was 64.2%, 81.1%, 49.5%, and 89.5%, respectively. CVC was seen in 22.1% of patients on echocardiography, mostly involving the mitral valve. Patients with CVC were more likely to ...

We investigated the metabolic variation of active ingredients of ‘Hupingzao’ at different maturity stages (S1–S5) using widely targeted metabolites. In total, 406 compounds were detected, 191 were annotated by the KEGG...

Authors: Saritas T, Floege J Abstract Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at increased risk for kidney failure, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and death. In fact, the likelihood of dying from CVD is markedly higher than that for reaching end-stage renal disease. Evidence-based management of comorbidities such as CVD remains challenging in patients with advanced CKD, as they were usually excluded from randomized controlled trials. This review focuses on the epidemiology, risk factors, and clinical manifestations of CVD in patients with advanced CKD. Specific topics of interest include diagnostic and therap...

Linto SibiAbstractNano-biocomposites that mimics bone’s extracellular matrix with hydroxyapatite as an inorganic and silk fibroin as organic phase for three different ratios via a simple in-situ co-precipitation method have been synthesized. The silk fibroin, a biodegradable polymer from cocoons of Bombyx mori silkworm were extracted by employing a chemical-free High-Temperature High-Pressure method as a degumming route. Then followed by the regeneration process which was do...

AbstractPurpose of reviewHigh resolution esophageal manometry (HRM) has expanded understanding of esophageal motor function. The Chicago Classification scheme has allowed systematic categorization of the myriad of manometric parameters identified during HRM. Multichannel intraluminal impedance pH has enhanced ambulatory reflux monitoring through complete assessment of esophageal content transit. However, the clinical implications of identified minor esophageal functional disorders remain unclear.Recent findingsEsophagogastric junction outlet obstruction is defined by esophagogastric junction obstruction with preserved peri...

ConclusionsWithin its limitations, the study results qualify collagen as a biocompatible carrier for BCPs. The presence of collagen indicated neither significant impact on the resorption of the BCPs nor on bone formation.Clinical relevanceThe addition of collagen to BCPs might not be beneficial for the augmentation of extended bone deficiencies.

C. elegans PVD neurons are conserved for morphology, function and molecular determinants with mammalian polymodal nociceptors. Functions of polymodal nociceptors require activities of multiple ion channels and receptors including members of the TRP family. GTL-1, a member of the TRPM subclass of TRP channels, was previously shown to amplify PVD-mediated responses to optogenetic stimuli. Here we characterize effects of GTL-1 on PVD-mediated behavioral responses to noxious stimuli. We show that GTL-1 is required within PVD for the immediate and enduring response to thermal (cold) stimuli. But, find no significant reduction i...
